Classroom Guidance Lessons

Classroom guidance is a developmental program of classes designed to foster students' academic, career, and personal/social development. Classes are preventative in nature and empower students with self-knowledge, coping strategies, and life skills that will assist them in becoming problem solvers, collaborative workers, and responsible citizens.

Common Classroom Guidance Topics:

  • Bullying
  • Friendship
  • Self-Esteem
  • Decision Making
  • Getting Along with Others
  • Study Skills/Test Strategies
  • Tattling
  • Career Awareness
  • Self-Control
  • Stress Management
  • Responsibility

We focus on a new character word each month. Students learn about what the word means and how it is demonstrated during classroom guidance time. Teachers select one student from their class per month who demonstrates the character word. The student is called on the morning announcements to receive an award, pencil, and have their picture taken. The picture is displayed outside the classroom until the next character student of the month is chosen.

Character Words:

  • September - Responsibility
  • October - Respect
  • November - Self-Discipline
  • December - Generosity
  • January - Honesty
  • February - Caring and Compassion
  • March - Trustworthiness
  • April - Perseverance

Small Group Counseling Services

Throughout the school year, I will organize several small groups. These small counseling groups center around a number of different topics. Topics include (but are not limited to) the following: divorce or separation, anger management, behavior choices, social skills, study skills, and friendship issues. Children are given the opportunity to talk to each other about their own personal situation and are taught strategies for handling certain common feelings. This time together helps children process emotions while decreasing feelings of isolation.

Please contact Mrs. Bain if one of the groups sounds like it would be beneficial to your child. Keep in mind that teachers may refer students for groups, too. Groups usually meet once a week for a half an hour. Teachers are able to select times that work with your child's schedule.

Bullying Prevention

Our school is actively involved in teaching students about all forms of bullying. From our school counselors, to administrators, to teachers and staff, we are all united in preventing bullying of any form at our school.
