Education Programs

Art

Each class in grades K to 5 has an art class during the week.

Computer Instruction

All classrooms have computers for student use. In addition, a computer lab is available for instructional use. Teachers schedule their classroom for the computer lab.

CREATE

Creative Resources for Exceptional Academic and Talented Endeavors is a program designed for students identified as general intellectually gifted.

DARE

Drug Awareness Resistance Education is a program for 5th grade students. The DARE Officer, a member of the Colonial Heights Police Department, teaches the course during the second semester.

ESL

The ESL program provides instruction in the English language to students from other countries. This program also provides instructional support to students using other languages, fifty percent or more of the time, at home.

Guidance Services

A full-time and part-time counselor serves the students, parents, and staff. The counselors are available for individual and group counseling and guidance. Other duties include the counselors work with the students on study skills, organization, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships.

Media Center (Library)

All grades are scheduled for a period in the library. During that period, the librarian teaches library skills and gives them time to select their own reading material. Other teachers may schedule their classes to use the media center for research.

Music

Students in grades K to 3 have a general music class per week. In grades four and five, students are taught to play the piano through electronic keyboards.

Literacy Extension

Each class, grades K-5, meets with the Literacy Extension teacher once each week for instruction in Writing and Reading. Activities are designed to correlate with each grade level's curriculum map and Standards of Learning. Literacy Extension provides an opportunity for learners to explore new books, participate in literacy activities, and enhance their writing skills.

Physical Education

All students receive instruction in physical education from a qualified instructor. Grades 1-5 receive the instruction four times a week and kindergarten three times a week. Instruction for the remaining days is presented by the regular classroom teacher.

SODA

Students Organized to Develop Attitudes is a program for 5th grade students taught by juniors and seniors from Colonial Heights High School. These classes meet once every two weeks.

Special Education

Tussing Elementary School offers a variety of special education programs that provide educational services for children with special needs. Special education services are provided in a collaborative or small group setting as specified in each child's Individualized Education Program or IEP. In addition, the school system has a Parent Resource Center located at the Colonial Heights Technical Center.

Tiger T.E.A.M.S.

We are excited to continue the Tiger T. E. A. M. S. program for the third year. The program has expanded and now reaches children who need challenges as well as reinforcement in all academic areas while also providing positive community role models. Currently the program is reaching students from all grade levels. Tutors are Colonial Heights High School students, who travel to Tussing during their study hall or after their school day ends. Other tutors include persons from the Retired Teacher Association, civic organizations, parents, and grandparents. There is not cost to the students participating and all supplies are provided.
